The coat

A coat for
a lifetime

This coat is a timeless classic — a structured wrap coat with clean lines, a perfect shoulder, and an ease of wear that only the finest construction can achieve. The kind of coat you reach for every single autumn, for the rest of your life.

During this retreat you will sew this coat entirely yourself — from the first cut to the final press — guided by Maaike and using the same couture construction principles that make a handmade coat last decades.

Double faced wool seam technique
The technique

Double faced wool —
the invisible seam

Double faced wool is one of the most extraordinary fabrics in tailoring — two layers of fine wool bonded together, with no lining needed. The inside of the coat is as beautiful as the outside.

The secret lies entirely in the seam finishing. A special couture technique — rarely taught, almost never found in pattern instructions — that opens each seam by hand, separates the two layers, and folds them back to create a clean, invisible finish. No raw edges. No lining. Pure craft.

The fabric

Your double faced wool

You bring your own double faced wool to the retreat, or order it in advance. In time you will receive more information about the right fabric specifications and recommendations on where to buy it.

3.5m
Minimum recommended
A minimum of 3.5 meters is recommended for most sizes. Full fabric specifications and buying recommendations will be sent after booking.
Day by day

Schedule

Day 1
Welcome, toile & fit
09:30 gather at the venue. Introduction to double faced wool — how the fabric is constructed, how to cut and handle it. We prepare the pattern, make a toile in cotton to determine the right fit for your body, and make any adjustments before cutting into the real fabric.
Days 2–4
Construction & the invisible seam
The heart of the retreat. Sewing and finishing each seam by hand using the invisible technique. The coat takes shape — body, side seams, back seam, all finished to couture standard. Freshly prepared lunches and snacks daily.
Day 5
Collar, sleeves & structure
Setting in the sleeves, constructing the collar, building the shoulder. The tailoring details that give this coat its distinctive silhouette and make it sit perfectly on the body.
Day 5 — evening
Farewell dinner
A celebratory dinner in beautiful Arona — together around a long table, coats on, stories to last a lifetime.
Day 6
Hems, edges & final press
All edges finished by hand. The final press. The moment you put your coat on for the first time. The retreat ends at 17:00. All evenings throughout the week are yours to explore Arona and the lake.
